Ever since its inception, Vunraksha has
started an anti-poaching campaign within its area of operation. Till very recently, the
wildlife of the area had been under pressure from hunting. This had been going on partly
due to laxity of enforcement, and partly due to a lack of awareness about the need for
conservation - since deer, antelope and pigs are present in relatively higher numbers
in the area.
By sending out clear signals against poaching,
Vunraksha is successfully spreading the word of conservation amongst the local population.
It has also initiated a regular interaction with the local Forest & Police department
officials which helps in exchange of information about poaching and other illegal wildlife
trade activities.
Collaborative project in
Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve:
The Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve authorities have drawn
up a micro-plan towards making the villagers living in and around the reserve, more
eco-friendly. It envisages a reduction of human & cattle pressure on the forest by
involving the villagers and seeking their cooperation in conservation. This plan is being
implemented with the help of the NGO sector, and Vunraksha has joined in this
collaborative project. It has undertaken to hold monthly medical camps in the villages, by
bringing in doctors and medicines to the doorsteps of the villagers. In addition, it has
also undertaken to aid the education of village children by providing free school
uniforms. This activity has already been carried out in the Dobha & Rancha villages
Based on discussions with the Bandhavgarh Tiger
Reserve authorities and other collaborating agencies, and depending on the availability of
funds, Vunraksha will soon be formulating an action plan for:
Payment of compensation for cattle kills made
by tigers / panthers in the buffer zone
Patrolling of forests along with beat guards
Payment of compensation to villagers for crop damage by wild
ungulates
Reduction in numbers of village cattle by replacement
with high-yield milch cattle
Arranging seminars / training programmes for local
population & FD staff in law enforcement / legal procedures
